ADA NSW CPD Program Guide : Autumn 2014
CPD Hours: 4 Practical Endodontics: A simple, practical approach in Rotary Endodontics Presented by Dr Shalin Desai Endodontic NiTi file systems have evolved a long way since introduction of various machine- cut rotary files to reciprocating files then, twisted rotary files and now state of the art self-reciprocating twisted file system. These improved mechanical tools along with a better understanding of biological process of endodontic diseases and chemical disinfection protocol have revolutionised the practical approach for root canal treatments and improved predictability of treatment outcome. However it would also be general consensus that Endodontics is right up there with the most stressful daily activities. Add to this the patient perception of Endo and possible mid-treatment flare-ups - it often makes for a challenging few hours for all. This course is designed for general dentists who wish to provide excellent endodontic care for their patients through advanced rotary instrumentation, e ective irrigation and masterful obturation. This exciting program covers clinical solutions and suggestions on how to treat simple to moderately complex endodontic cases as well as hands-on workshops designed to enhance the clinicians' practical skills. Topics include • Diagnosis and case selection -- from first phone call to final diagnosis and treatment planning as well as discussion of various case scenarios. • Advanced Diagnostic tool -- 3D CBCT in Endodontics - How to interpret the complex images? • Hot Pulp -- Anaesthetic management • Learning Technical aspects -- access cavity, locating canals, Shaping, Irrigation, medicaments and root filling. How we do this and why? • Hand-on sessions for shaping and filling using rotary/reciprocating twisted files and warm vertical compaction • Controversial issues - Endo or Implants? Success rates in endodontics? To keep or not to keep the tooth. About the presenter Dr Shalin Desai (B.D.S., Grad Dip P.H. (UNSW), D. Clin. Dent. (Otago)), graduated with Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Endodontics) from the University of Otago in 2009. Prior to specialisation, Shalin spent considerable time practicing general dentistry in the public and private sectors in Sydney. Since returning to Sydney, he has been in his own specialist practices in Norwest and Hornsby, as well as working part time as clinical educator for final year dental students at Westmead dental hospital. Shalin has published scientific papers in national and international journals, and his doctoral thesis on endodontic immunology was presented at European endodontic society's biannual meeting at Edinburgh. Shalin is actively involved in endodontic teaching and has enjoyed presentations and hands-on courses at study club meetings and local dentist groups.
